URI biomedical engineering Professor Walt Besio conducts research regarding thought interpretation. Highly sensitive electrodes translate a person's thoughts into electrical impulses that can be read by a computer. He hopes that these experiments will help in assisting the paralyzed with spinal cord injuries.
Besio is a Recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which is administered by the United Negro College Fund. Inspired by his brother who was paralyzed in a car accident, Besio began his study in biomedical engineering, where his invented his ultra-sensitive electrodes.
