NIU President John Peters told faculty and staff that the coming year holds serious financial challenges for the university due to the ongoing state budget crisis. The presidents remarks, delivered at a meeting of the NIU Board of Trustees and streamed live over the Internet, included new directives aimed at helping the university navigate a serious cash-flow crisis. Until last week, the president said, NIU had not received any payments from the state since July 1. Even with a recent $8 million payment, Peters said NIU is still owed $57 million in late appropriations. Peters urged the campus to save money in any way possible to help NIU meet payroll and other obligations.
