@NovaScotiaChick The lyrics, albeit true, are depressing. The literal translation that I give you, plus the lack of rhyme does not compliment the song. Bear that in mind. Dutch metaphors can be hard to translate into English. Dutch lyrics: discoveen.nl / vamanno.htm (ignore spaces)

@AndySachsPriestly The translation was ready a couple of days ago and I sent a message to the person who posted the clip, asking if the English lyrics could be posted with his comment, but there's no response, so here goes!

Now that I have really focused on the words, I am rather disappointed that this was meant to be a Christmas messge! It is a protest song and it s•o•u•n•d•s beautiful, b•e•c•a•u•s•e Herman sings it.

Wanneer ik naar Herman kijk en luister, ben ik trots om (nog steeds) nederlandse te zijn. Omdat ik in 1983 uit NL vertrok, heb ik Herman's carrière niet gevolgd maar onlangs was ik zeer verrast dat zijn stem nóg beter is dan vroeger. youtube tells all. Bijna altijd wordt 'het mooie' van de stem van zangers/zangeressen t.z.t. aangetast (denk maar aan Barbra Streisand), maar niet die van Herman. Ik wist niet dat hij ook viool speelde, enz. 5 ***** voor zijn creativiteit en liefde voor het vak.
