Estimates on the fate and timing of our sun's death vary. The common theory is that the sun will expand into a red giant, engulfing the earth. A long time after that it probably will become a white dwarf. Most of the timescales I've seen put the red giant stage a good deal less than 4.5 billion years.

@vengencefrom1979 The longer the half-life of something, the less it's radioactive. 4.47 billion is the half-life of U238. It would be radioactive for far longer. Like I already stated, it is toxic.

@vmelkon depleted uranium is radioactive and remains so for 4 billion years. used in weapons it becomes dust upon impact. if the dust is inhaled you are dead.
