The lava flows on Kilauea had advanced to within two miles from the ocean at about the 700 foot elevation on the hillside known as Pulama Pali. The general direction at this point seemed directly south and pointing to the previous ocean entry which stopped flowing at the beginning of the year. The slope on the hillside is very gentle and the area at the bottom is very flat, so the flow can still change course and flow in any direction.

wait a minute so it's going to hit the ocean without a lava tube?
altruistichedonist 1 year ago
@altruistichedonist Lava tubes form when the surface flow crusts up and the lava keeps flowing under the crust. So there can't be a tube emptying into the ocean until the surface flow creates one.

How long do you think it will be real estate?
contessaoreilly 1 year ago
@contessaoreilly
If it kept going, it would tend to spread out and slow down once it reaches the coastal plain. Then it would take several more weeks to reach the ocean. The big problem is that the tube keeps plugging up higher up and interrupting the flow, and the surface flows have to start where the tube breaks open. It got to within one half mile of the ocean just one month ago when this happened.
