@barrettreynolds5 NEither of them was a crash, challenger exploted seconds after takeoff, and columbia disintegrated. both are just as bad but challenger had a higher chacne of being avoided than columbia.

@eddo1983 it should'nt have even lifted off, nasa engineers want'd to scrub the launch due to the extremely cold temps during the night, as they knew it could affect the srb's.
But nasa management were ignorant of this and launched the shuttle instead. As for columbia, the launch should have been aborted during lift off, I'm sure they would have seen the wing getting damaged on live cameras during liftoff.

Over a span of 15 years between the first disaster and the second, NASA made one improvement to its shuttle program. It taught the personnel to start saying "contingency" instead of "major malfunction" when shuttle exploded. That's progress, U.S. military-industrial complex style!!
