In 1999, after a devastating earthquake, the future for the Turkish city of Eskisehir looked bleak. Today the city has been transformed into one of Turkey's most vibrant cultural centres.

This remarkable change is largely due to a series of ambitious restoration projects put in place by mayor Yilmaz Büyükerşen.

Büyükerşen explains his motivation behind his work: "I wanted Eskisehir to be a city where you can live joyfully and I wanted the city to be some kind of role model for the other cities of Anatolia.

"I also wanted to be as good as the cities in other European countries and I wanted Eskisehir people to be proud of their city.

"And I wanted the children of Eskisehir not to want to leave the city when they grow up."

Under the leadership of Büyükerşen, a former economics professor, the city municipality has been able to keep almost all production and construction work in house, which has kept restoration costs low and developed local industries.
