Wow, I disagree with you on so many points here. Well, we probably have very different tastes.
I enjoyed the dark tone. There is an element of darkness in all of our childhoods. Simply put, it actually appeals to me.
I found the rudeness and awkwardness of Depp entertaining and funny. I guess the key word here is I found him delightful. So...I found him likable.
But the backstory does bother me. It focuses far too much on Wonka, instead of Charlie. And that doesn't work.

It's ironic: the movie that focuses more on Charlie makes Willy Wonka the title character while the one that focuses more on Wonka makes Charlie the title character.

Thank you. I detest this movie. It's an insult to Roald Dahl, one of the best authors of all time (and whose book Matilda has shaped the person I am today more than any other fiction book). The movie completely missed the point of the book so much that it created a horrible, dark story that is unpleasant to watch. The Willy Wonka in this version is creepy and unlikable. In my opinion, nothing saves this movie. It's on my list of the worst movies I've ever seen. And I love the book too.

Charlie i agree is far to nice, and the 1971 portrayed him exceedingly well because as we know we aren't all perfect and selfless like him! The other charecters i agree were developed well, and reminded me of as you say 'that parent'.

i Actually enjoy Depp's portrayal of Wonka. I find his rudeness to be hilarious, and his awkwardness to be appropriate considering his isolation, his surreal imagination is potrayed rather magnificently in the movie for example the whipped cream scene. However the focus on Wonka is a little overboard and was rather unnecessary, however Tim burton always makes Depp a vocal point in his movies.

I think you should do Escape to Witch Mountain for a book vs movie review. Either that or Momo by Michael Ende

Obviously we are very different people. I thought the TB movie was a bit weird. Plus TB is always doing the misfit story and he does it again here with WW backstory. It gets kind of tiring.

See. I much prefer the movie in this case, if only because I dislike the book. I sort of prefer the original movie, but there are points in it that I simply hate.
But all this comes down from the fact that I simply didn't enjoy the book in this instance.

What was so good about the movie? It sucked, and the book was so much better.

well i will agree that the story is suppose to be about charlie and not wonka. that is the major issue with me about the movie because hello the book and movie title is called Charlie and the chacolate factory for a reason. it's suppose to be about Charlie! and not wonka. I like how that certain scene when everyone entered the factory that the chacolate river looks realiztic. But the tone is not bright :/ as much as i love burton's works this was not his best movie.
