Google Bombs Loves Scientology

Yet again, over a year since the first George Bush "miserable failure" Google Bomb was ignited, we again see the makings of another backlink and anchor-text driven campaign to trick the Google Algorithm into giving the top search engine ranking to an artificial slander campaign. This time, Scientology is the target and "dangerous cult" is the weapon. What makes this Google Bomb so different is its social marketing component and momentum to generate these controversial backlinks. Be forewarned, though, that Google does not like being manipulated like this and I expect big Google ranking changes over the next few weeks.

Every time Google changes it's algorithm someone is going to find a way to trick it. Do you think the company will ever find a way to circumvent this?

Nope! There will always be some black hat strategy or loop-hole out there. Filling up one hole is only going to expose a new one. In this example, if they choose to punish those with large number of backlinks with similar anchor text (which they already do to some extent), that means they increase the priority of some other aspect of SEO. The game will always be dynamic!

Technically, there is nothing illegal about this. It does show that Google's algorithm is not fool-proof, though. Ultimately, this will probably hurt the world of SEO. Every time Google tried to fix this, it seems that it screws up a large number of the "legitimate" backlink efforts that are currently out there.
