357 is superior. Somewhat close but still superior. Big and fast.45 is a decent and potent weapon though. Big and a little slower. I would say they should be the top choices for personal protection. 357 in a 4 or 6 inch is incredibly powerful at a close range.

@olivjm If you're saying the .45 has twice the kinetic energy and therefore, more powerful than the .357magnum, then I'm sorry to tell you that you have no idea what you're talking about. Why don't you check for yourself and calculate muzzle energy between the two calibers? You will find out that the .357mag is ballistically superior. There are so many flaws in your statement I don't even know where to start.

@wilmerpola777 Your trying to say that the .45ACP has trouble going through winter clothes so the police switched to .40's and 9mm? Are you on crack? The 45 has more power and will go through any winter coat. The police switched to 9mm autoloaders for round capacity not because the .45 was lacking in the power catagory.
