Girl's Hooded Sweater Recalled by El Gringo Imports Due to Strangulation Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Girl's Hooded Sweater with Drawstring

Units: About 300

Importer: El Gringo Imports of Seattle

Hazard: The hooded sweaters have drawstrings through the hood which can pose a strangulation or entrapment hazard to children. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/208.pdf (pdf), which were incorporated into an industry voluntary standard in 1997, to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets and sweatshirts.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported

Description: The recalled product is a hand-knitted wool sweater with a hood in sizes 1 through 10. The sweater has a drawstring in the hood with multi-colored yarn tassels. The sweaters are multi-colored with a front zipper. "El Gringo Imports" is written on a black neck tag.

Sold: Pike Place Market in Seattle from November 2009 to August 2010 for between $20 and $25.

Manufactured in: Ecuador

Remedy: Consumers should immediately remove the drawstring from the sweatshirt to eliminate the hazard or contact El Gringo Imports for instructions on how to receive a full refund.
