he is playing the cornet, which is very similar to the trumpet. and yes one of the best.

Man this is so great to find gems like this
it helps put the early architecture of Jazz in to perspective. Thanks IT's wonderful !

After listening to this again, it appears that no one really plays a solo in the modern sense; just an elaboration on the melody.

John, the fact that they used guitar instead of banjo is good, but are the solos authentic? Bolden never played a whole chorus by himself, did he? Hardie ("Exploring Early Jazz") claims that the Kid Rena recordings shocked people in the 40s who were used to the white Dixieland revial stuff. Apparently people said the playing was out of tune. Not to my ears, how about yours?

John - No one knows for sure what Bolden sounded like, but have you listened to Wooden Joe Nicholas on trumpet? He is rougher that Rena, and there is some oral history evidence from older musicians that said he "sounds like Bolden".
Rena does show signs of Armstrong's influence IMHO.
I did say to me possibly not what they sounded like. I have heard all the Wooden Joe stuff too and love it, especially up jumped the Devil. The reason I chose this is because Alphonse Picou is playing clarinet.
