Actually, in the opera, Clara sings this aria as a lullaby to her baby. After Clara dies and Bess takes the baby in, Bess sings the aria to the baby

@jcatenor Thanks for the correction. I knew Bess takes on the piece (I think a step lower) latter on the opera, but could not remember the name of the character that sings it in the opening.

Leontyne Price sang this role ten times better than Renee Fleming. I give Renee Fleming a "E" for effort but the she does not bring out the character in this piece.

I don't think Price ever sanf Serena (I think that is her name) but Bess. She did record the aria and hers is the best I have ever heard.

@Royalorgans UMMM Price never sang the role of Clara who sings the role of Clara in the Opera. She sang Bess though many times. Renee Fleming has NEVER sang in any performance of the Opera..Porgy and Bess. NOt the right color dear......
