Kurt and I hiked up Liberty and Flume in January, 2008. I had just purchased my first set of crampons and threw the box in my backpack. Turns out the box I had purchased was the display set and only contained one crampon. We managed and made it a fun hike on a nice winter day.
I definitely would suggest going up Flume instead of down. If there's any ice/snow left on the trail in the shady parts, the trail is very steep and tricky. The hike itself is very nice with great views of the notch and mountain range from the top of Liberty.
