recently i was wholly captured by footage showing close ups of solar flares. i then set out to edit the material (only a few seconds) to this 3 minutes clip. it includes a TRACE (http://trace.lmsal.com/POD/TRACEpod.htm l ) rendering of an unusual solar flare observed on april 21, 2002 (near 1'30"). all materials used here are in the public domain, as the data (see http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/) have been provided by projects labelling their imagery as freely distributable for noncommercial purposes. enjoy.

Wow, watching this really makes me think about the sun and its unbelievably unimaginable potential for the earth that we seem to forget. In a TED conferance film, Ray Kurzweil stated that if we could convert just .003% of the total light that fell to earth into electricity, we could have unlimited energy for the entire planet and meet 100% of our energy targets. It's really a no-brainer.....
i think this is the right number; you see each of those falres, they can be hundresds of km's long and when one of those flares 'snap' it is the equivilant to 100 million atomic bombs going off at the same time.
