USNS Impeccable Harassed by Chinese Vessels

Video shot by a crewmember aboard the USNS Impeccable, an unarmed Navy ocean surveillance ship, during a confrontation with five Chinese vessels in the South China Sea. The Chinese vessels attempted to snag the Impeccable's acoustic array sonars from beneath the ship, and manuevered in front of the ship, coming to a complete stop and almost causing a collision. The Chinese vessels at times came within 25 feet of the ship. Footage provided by Navy Visual News Service.

First, the US was conducting sonar mapping within international waters, which China has NO control over. According to international law, those waters are free for passage and use by all nations. The Chinese didn't like us gathering intelligence? Well boo-hoo. There is no nationalism or patriotism involved.  China wrong, US Navy ship right. PERIOD.

@elevenpastsix Would you be okay if Chinese Naval vessels conducted sonar reconnaissance 75 miles off the coast of Florida ? I'm Chinese, but I'd consider both parties in the wrong, as they both seem to be escalating tensions rather than easing the situation in an obviously sensitive and disputed area of the sea.

Those aren't international waters, it happened 75 miles off the coast of Chinese territorial Hainan, which is located within their 200 miles exclusive economic zone EEZ, which are NOT international waters. Their fleet contains a lot of submarines, a method to combat our superiority in Air craft Carriers, and thus our acoustic tracking of their submarines are a threat to their national security. Fools
