No. He is pretentious and eccentric and therefore must show his audience that by displaying his uniqueness and inability to relate to normal people. In other words, it's a show.

Well, for starters "plagism" is simply not a word in English language (it might be in some other language, I don't know).
And to agree with you, yes, I think No Surprises and Fitter Happier mirror each other thematically...American dream at its finest.
