  • No sir, you are incorrect, it is not a 6,000 horsepower unit. The DDA40X generates 6,600 horsepower through two turbocharged EMD 16-645E3A prime movers. Take it from a UP employee. Google "DDA40X", you'll get a ton of results that echo the same.

  • do they still have some that still run today?

  • @UPTRAIN And remember the time they briefly used 20% injectors to give those beasts 7200 HP! That was quoted from "Giants of the West", a great book dedicated to these mega-diesels.

  • Great Video 5*

  • I love the sound of that horn!

  • 威猛!

  • Yes--finally!!! They finally put a proper horn on this engine--sounds like an S-3. It's what many of them had originally. Sounds great.

  • UP uses the 6936 for their business trains and other specials.

  • to dalanham.... first of all there is no such animal as a DD40X. It's DDA40X. If you would like to see the owner's manual, email me and I'll forward you a copy. Secondly, it has two 3,300 two stroke turbocharged diesels. That equals 6,600 horsepower. You can beg all you want, you're just wrong.

  • They keep changing the horn on this!! What do they use this for?

  • An intereating note, they were numbered in the 6900 series because the golden spike centennial was going on, so they EMD russhed the building of the first DDA40X so it could attend the event, and in honor of the occasion it was numbered 6900.
