In Bootbay Harbor I spotted about 14 Long-tailed ducks. They are not only gorgeous sea ducks, but they make the funniest call. They are divers and while they typically eat close to the surface they can reach depths of about 200 feet!

  • i don't believe i ever heard of them called long tailed ducks . the correct name is oldsquaw.

  • In North American English it was formerly called Oldsquaw. The American Ornithologists' Union (2000) stated that "to conform with English usage in other parts of the world", it officially adopted the name Long-tailed Duck.

  • i never heard of the amu. and i don't care about the rest english parts of the world. we're the dominate culture in the world and they can conform to us. i know people whose families have duck hunted for 150 years. to them an oldquaw is still an oldquaw.
