Metal wasn't started in America, arguably the first metal band was Sabbath, an ENGLISH band. All the bands that revolutionized metal, pre thrash, were brittish. Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest are the god fathers of Metal.

@grimiguana true.. most of the groundbreaking "classic" death metal bands are american, whereas Sweden is mostly known for pioneering the melodic death metal scene...
