A short TV current affairs article, presented by Paul Holmes, on the work of Pauline Avis (McNab, formerly Gilheany), one of New Zealand's leading practitioners of rebirthing-breathwork and primal therapy, including a controversial interview between two esteemed experts of radically opposing views.

This intense piece shows Pauline's fusion of rebirthing-breathwork with primal therapy, resulting in a powerfully confronting but deeply effective composite modality. Featured is a medical doctor who had been dying of non-Hodgkins lymphatic cancer, but produced clear CT scans, blood tests and bone marrow within five weeks of embracing Pauline's techniques.

This video was filmed in Wanaka, New Zealand by leading television broadcaster Television New Zealand (www.tvone.co.nz) in 1991, and screened nationwide within New Zealand in November the same year.

This video screened in 2 parts:

Part 1. Pauline's work with her clients, an intimate look into her intense workshops, and an interview with the doctor who healed from cancer

Part 2. An interview with Leonard Orr (USA, the founder of rebirthing breathwork), and (the late) Dr Kenneth Unger (NZ, a psychologist famed for pushing New Zealand psychology research and practice towards greater formality and rigor). In this interview, it comes across clearly how mainstream psychology's demand for certainty and consistency can often cause it to discard less conventional and often powerfully effective alternative approaches.

  • @FraterAnarkhos modern medicine, herbalism, chiropractics, or anything else, not exclusive. These are styles shown. Breathing is an art. True Rebirthing is very gentle, relaxing, and blissful, or at least that is the intent. Sometimes things can get emotional, but it is not supposed to be the focus. I would say that a movement of probably hundreds of thousands spread across the world, dedicated to it is impressive empirical evidence, especially given he doesn't really advertise.

  • True, pure Rebirthing is not deluded by dramatics, and is not meant to involve tons of screaming. Leonard has tried to change the name of the movement to a couple different things because of this. I would argue that it has the ability to 'resolve' this conflict as much as anything else. Personally, I began talking to my father again after years of basic silence because of my third Rebirthing session. Listen to Leonard when he talks. He teaches people that his methods are complementary to

  • This was actually a good article. Rebirthing is ultimately just temporary tension relief, and to that end it can help some people. But it does not cure - it does not "resolve" the imprint driving the tension in the first place.

It can be dangerous with pre-psychotics because it can catastrophically destabilise an already unstable defence system.

You should try Dr Arthur Janov's Primal Therapy instead. He is the true and original scientist behind all this stuff.

  • This is no more than a group of highly suggestible people who subscribe to treatment that is not empirically supported. A few children died because of similar "therapies"
