Wonderful. Moffo is Moffo....not a bad thing at all. This opera is great!

@Turand0t I completely agree with you. Big voices can be emotional.I have been told that I have that kind of voice too, and I am a sensitive person deep inside so I have to work on the control issue, in order not to harm my voice. This is a future idea. Because I still have lot of things to learn.
Anna's singing really moves me in most arias. And I do not resonate so easily, and I am not brought to tears by anybody.I suggest that one must take into consideration even exceptions before talking.

I think the person who thought this is sometimes sung by a mezzo is mixing up the title role in this opera - Herodiade - and the role of Salome from which this aria comes. Larger soprano voices often have a darker 'colour' which can make them sound mezzo-like. As for the various comments regarding big voices and lack of feeling - absolute nonsense. Quite apart from anything else, Miss Moffo's voice is not unsubstantial - she wouldn't be singing this if it were!
-
And actually large dramatic voices can get sweet, yes. The problem is, it takes LOTS of training to do it without totally screwing up the voice. So people should, at first, have a big voice and then STUDY before saying such nonsense.
-
@Turand0t Yes, indeed. I've seen young people with large voices having to control the voice and having 'trouble' with the frenetic inner sensation that the repertory and the voice itself cause to them. The 'unfeeling' thing is an absurd to me.

I have never ever heard it sung by a mezzo either, so... I have no idea where cleanears took that comment from. Doesn't seem to educated to me.
-
In addition, this never sung by a dramatic mezzo. Cleanears clearly spoke before considering his/her words
-
That is not true at all. Ignorant statement.
-
Indeed!!! It just sets me off when people write stuff like that... Ignorance I call that.
-
I'm also not understanding that comment. Aprile Millo has a pretty big voice and she's quite moving, and she certainly has a lot of company.
-
I take great offence by your words. Are you saying that big voiced sopranos are unfeeling? I pour as much emotion in to my singing as possible and have been told that I will wreck myself if I don't learn to control my emotions. Big voices require extreme vocal control not to wreck themselves. That does not mean that one has to be unfeeling. Was Callas unfeeling? She had a big voice. She's only one example. It's pretty rude of you to write such a statement.

I am re discovering this wonderful singer and boy is it hard not to be insanely jealous of her looks, her voice and her great sense of sentimentality. She was truly one of the greats. I loved her interpretation here. Nicely sung.

"Brilliant mind-- she won a Fulbright!" people don't realize what it takes to get a Fulbright. I love this aria, but it is usually subject to dramatic mezzos or big voiced unfeeling sopranos.

This is one of the most beautiful voices ever. Thank You!
Sorry for all you heavy dramatic singers. You can't achieve this beauty.

Positively beautiful. Thanks for posting this!

This was STUNNING!

Thank you so much for posting this. I am re-discovering this great American soprano. She just seems to be the most wonderful example of being prepared on every level. Brilliant mind-- she won a Fulbright! Such an inspiration to singers everywhere. Good stuff!

One of the most beautiful French arias I ever heard.
Since they never came out on cd, I decided to post the Verdi and French Arias albums. Glad you like it.
