We have been using our retained heat cook box for several months now and want to provide an update. We discovered that cooking this way is fantastic, easy, saves money, makes your food taste better than ever, increases nutrition, adds flexibility to your schedule and makes clean up so much easier. In fact, we are so excited about this and have learned so much more about it that we have just released a detailed 50 page e-book "Retained Heat Cooking ... the Wave of the Future Again."

  • i love you guys and your family. this way of living has been a dream for a while and seeing you guys do it is so inspiring. your inspiration is really getting me to move towards this style of living. we've started a organic heirloom garden, we wash our clothes by hand, and now we've been using a cook box for the last 3 weeks. simply amazing how good the food comes out. thank you sooo much for sharing your wonderful lives with everyone. much love and respect!!!!

  • Thank you for your supportive comment. One of the reasons that we have this channel and website is that we were blessed to live near a Mennonite country store where we were able to observe farm life. A few years later we happened on our homestead. So we are glad to hear that our work is helping others make that same transition.

  • This is cool. Its like what they do in the Pacific like Hawaii and Samoa. THey dig a hole in the sand. and insulate it with banana leaf and put the food in and cover it with hot coal and dirt. They leave it all day and when it comes out everything is perfectly cooked. It is the most low energy way of cooking I can think of. I guess this is a way to do that in a more urban setting. Thanks for sharing.

  • Yes, you have it exactly! Some peoples also put hot rocks in the bottom of the pit, and then add the food and the leaves.

Retained heat cooking in a cook box is great to do in the country too because having a box in the kitchen is just a lot easier than using a hole in the yard.

It is an incredible way to cook that makes you feel good for a lot of reasons. Easy to do and easy to try. Thank you for your comment.

  • are you living this way because of your religion? Please don't take this question personally, I was just curious.

  • Thank you for your question. I really do not have a clear answer. Our lifestyle is based in our spiritual practice which encourages a simple and natural lifestyle. However, of the 1 million people or so that practice this raja yogic system we are the only ones that we know about that live this way intentionally. So it is not a mandatory requirement.

  • Thanks for the help! Hey guys! I just got a ton of free drinks from a coke machine i learned at howtoebooks . info

  • I like this idea. I've got a glass box filled with sand that I use for retained heat cooking. It's kind of messy but worth the hassle in the summer months when the sun is able to heat up the sand. I think I may try your method in the winter. I'm not spiritual and I don't worry about saving the planet, but I love this way of cooking. Nothing is easier for all your slow cooking dishes.

  • thank you for sharing this video!

  • Why do you always sound stuffed up like you have a cold?

  • This is a stroke of genius! It makes me crazy having the stovetop on for hours. How about using a metal coleman cooler (lined as you have done with your basket)?

  • This is so neat!...you know, as a matter of fact, I've noticed that clothes out of the dryer retains heat for many hours, even without the cooking pot!

This is very informative and interesting.

    Thanks again!
