animate it with keyframes then motion tile the edges.

you used after effects, but all you did was drag a pre-composed muzzle flash with smoke onto your footage. no offense but pretty easy to do.

Sure, plus the flash masks which was re-adjusted on every frame when there is a muzzle flash. Then the camera shake. (not just "wiggle and pick-whip"... notice the change in frequency, those keyframes were manually composed by hand for parts where the gun was firing shots...just for realism)
and finally... over thirty layers of effects in total...

Well never mind, your method obviously was a little more complicated. But some people all I see them do is take their Action Movie Essentials and drag it on to their footage and they are done. But it did look very nice! :]

well I did use stuff from AME but just that is NOT enough. Lots of things happen when you fire a live weapon. So you need those details. (in this case... illumination and camera shake and of course the sound)
