Broadcast (1998) What drives the tectonic plates as they glide over the Earth's surface? Searching for an answer scientists have probed our planet to its core. In this realm of unimaginably high temperatures and pressures matter takes on new forms and solid rock can behave like a fluid. As vast masses of rock flow slowly within the Earth, so the surface moves and changes. Gigantic plumes of hot material can well up from the depths, triggering huge volcanic eruptions and causing the crust to bulge and break. The result may be the splitting of a continent.

Earth is alive, but not just teeming with life; it is a living entity. It moves, deep inside and on the surface. Moreover, scientists have now discovered that the origins of life itself depended on the active geology of our planet. The earth is more than simply our birthplace, it is quite literally the thing that gave us birth. Earth Story unravels the secrets of our planet and brings it alive. The series took three years to make and was filmed all over the world, from the craters of active volcanoes to the ocean floor. Where the cameras could not go, in both time and space, the latest animation techniques take over. Combining live action footage with state of the art computer graphics which enable us to travel back and forwards through time, this is a fantastic journey of scientific discovery and a comprehensive history of life in all its forms on planet Earth.

When and how was the Earth formed? What is the link between earthquakes, volcanoes and the creation of the continents? How do mountains affect our climate? What triggers Ice Ages? This series answer these and many other questions, telling the amazing story of Earth and its constantly changing nature. Two centuries ago scientists began to investigate the history of the Earth by examining the rocks beneath its surface and began to formulate the astonishing concept of geological time. Using this discovery as their starting point, Earth Story unravel the fascinating history of the Earth from its earliest beginnings to the dawn of human civilisation.

Two themes emerge as this compelling story unfolds. Firstly, from its molten core to the outermost reaches of its atmosphere, our planet operates as one vast interlinked system. Aspects of our landscape and climate that seem at first quite distinct such as earthquakes, volcanoes, glaciers and monsoons are in fact intimately related to each other. Secondly, the active geology of our world has been vital to the origin of life and the progress of evolution. The authors tackle these ideas, using full colour illustrations, stunning photography and the latest scientific thinking. By describing the remarkable forces that formed and shape our ever changing world, Earth Story gives us a new understanding of the planet and our place within its evolution.

  • just had an earthquake here...

and a christian said "thank god everyone is safe." im not trying to offend but im having trouble with that. if everyone died of that earthquake, would u still thank god? why not curse your god for creating earthquakes that already killed millions of humans in the first place? religious people are always devoid of logic.

  • that water level. was that a low tide or high tide? so many things lacking here...

  • The core is kept hot by two things, radioactive decay and primordial heat left over from the original formation of the earth. The earth is cooling and shrinking. Eventually as the core cools plate tectonics will cease.

  • Why is the core molten? Does any other planet in the solar system have a molten core?

  • @Greyhound1405 I think it is awesome you're 64 with a mind open to learning new things

  • in india ,tamilnadu ,human souls are taken under earth ,under rocks ,even to several thousnds kilometers under rocks, taking old revenges ,vengenes ,conspirancies ,polatics and given different shapes .in sevrages and made like aliens .taking under earth and beating and burning .please save to every one, every molecules and request to bring all the souls ,creatures from under earth to on earth .and requests to request not to spoil souls and humans.please save from pains sufferings .please save

  • taking revenges, taking under earth alive , several thousnds kilometers under earth , even to center of the earth, where no body can be able to find out , under rocks .even converting souls (atamas) to pieces the size of molecules even to newtron, proton size so that no one can search .buring alive .beating , cutting parts of boby of (souls) atama , sending to hell the place where no body sees , making aliens and like aliens from human .joining different souls atamas giveing unnatural shapes .
