The Students - I"m so Young -Every Day of the Week Chess 902

The students in this Doowop classic from 1958.
First heard on a obscure English fold out Chess greatest hits lp in the sixties.
Later done by the beach boys on Beach boysToday from 1965 and also a great unknown favourite of mine.
This is nr 254 in Dave Marsh 's great Book with the subtitle "The 1001 greatest singles ever made".
It describes a encounter where, with a friend he enters a famous Doo wop Vinyl shop full of Doowop aficionado's.
The Students I'm so Young is on play, and the friend makes some loud remarks about the sentimentality of the song.
They of course had to run, and escaped barely alive. A great story and at the core of what happend here.
Innocence, I know, later exlpoited to death, is real here.
Thats what Phill Upchurch the great musician call's it "20th Century Classical music.".
Its a quote on his website but meant in general and not about this song .

On a hot (or cold) day some teenagers stumble into a studio with some songs, the circumstanes are right, the musicians are good and then they sing their heart out in total innocence.
They disappear and some years later its a hit. And only around the Year 2000 on the World Wide Web they finely get the recognition they deserve
That's 20tht Century Classic Music for you. A fair chance for everybody for eternal fame.
Thiis is not about the money of course but about the art !
Bach and Mozart would have loved it.

The book was written in 1989, but today juli 2010 when Googling Prez Tyus, the name of the singer, there is much more to be known.

Also learned on the internet that it was Jazz great Wes Montgomery who played on it in the Chess Studios, Chicago, Illinois on May 11, 1958.

Also one of the great all time two siders with on the A side I'm So Young
from the same session.
Both on my You tube

  • The NFL uses this song for their recent Ads. That's how I found it and I love Doo-Wops. Maybe the people who sang it can be paid finally.

  • thank you so much for posting the year of the song, believe or not finding out the year of the song was difficult.

  • Great Record,It Was First Released On The Indianapolis Note Label,Then released For National Distribution On Checker!!!

  • Very cool and unusual looking record player.. also one of my favorite songs! Great!

  • This great record was on the Note record label, it was the flip of Im So Young.

  • Great song! I was just thinking about this song. It didn't occur to me that this was on the "Chess" label. I'll have to keep an eye for it. Your setup there sounds pretty damn good, too!
