  • This is awesome man!

But why not include and use the 4th PSG channel?

  • @Adam060756

The PSG only has three channels. Two instrumental and one noise. Only you are referring to the Sega CD or 32x. Then maybe.

  • @SonicTheJackrabbit

I'm positive the SEGA Mega Drive Genesis had 4 PSG channels, ''The Revenge Of Shinobi'' by Yuzo Koshiro used all 4. The 8-bit SEGA Master System also used all 4 from the PSG SN76489 so it is there but nobody ever seems to use it.

  • @Adam060756

    Taken from Sega Retro Wiki:

Additional sound chip: Texas Instruments SN76489 4-channel PSG (Programmable Sound Generator)

Why is everyone telling me there is three instead of four!? XD

  • Oh damn.

  • You have to sacrifice a tone channel for pitch control over the noise channel . . . so you can have 3 tone channels if you don't care about variable pitch noise. (or if you're not using noise at all, obviously)

  • @SonicTheJackrabbit oh joy I'm late to this one by a long time but I'm sure you've already figured it out

it's a technical limitation of the mega drive, using three tone channels and the noise channel results in the crap noise channel as seen on the master system, whereas using two tone channels and the noise channel opens up more frequencies and thus a better noise channel

since the noise channel is commonly suited for hi-hats, and those come at a frequency not available, you can see why now

  • Hiroyuki Iwatsuki knew the limits of the Snes SPC700. Just sayin'.

  • Orginal drums are here and stopOFF! sample.

  • You should do Genesis remixes of Ken's Labyrinth

  • @SonicTheJackrabbit

I'm guessing most people assume there is only 3 because most Mega Drive Genesis soundtracks only use 3, very few programmers use all 4 like Yuzo Koshiro and Matt Furniss. I always knew there were 4 channels and not 3. The noise channel is actually the 4th channel so it's the 3rd square wave channel that is hardly ever used by programmers and composers.

Maybe it doesn't get used much due to memory in the carts or something? DAC eats up alot of memory.
