Episode 9 of James Burke's most well-known series "Connections" which explores the surprising and unexpected ways that our modern technological world came into existence. Each episode investigates the background of usually one particular modern invention and how it came into being. These explorations are an attempt to locate the "connections" between various historical figures who seemingly had nothing to do with each other in their own times, however once connected, these same figures combined to produce some of the most profound impacts on our modern day world; in a "1+1=3" type of way.

It is this type of investigation that is the core idea behind the Knowledge Web project, whereby sophisticated software is being developed to attempt to discover these subtle interconnections automatically. See http://k-web.org.

  • For some reason, when I try to watch episode seven it tells me that it is private and I can't view it. Is it that I am doing something wrong to pull it up or do I have to register for it or what? Thanks!

    P.S. FIRST POST! LOL!

  • Episode 7 will be available on July 14 or when YouTube backs down on their decision to destroy this channel. Whichever comes first. See channel page for details on how to view episode 7.

  • @BJW20111 Jesus! Spasibo bolshoi!

  • @DevrimJan The fort is Naarden. From another site: Naardenis a municipality and a town in the Gooi region in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. Naarden is an example of a Spanish star fort, complete with fortified walls and a moat. The walls and the moat have been restored and are in a very good state.

Naarden was granted its city rights in 1300 (the only town in Het Gooi to have been done so) and later developed into a fortressed garrison town with a textile industry.

  • who knows what connections will be made in the future due to people watching connections 0_0

  • @lastchaos007 Oo eh lee tour Eye-fell?

  • Et les mec pas nerveuse cette video moi Frenche héhé

  • boiling oil would not be dropped on an enemy, it was far too expensive. It would have been heated sand - cheap and not essential

  • 6:10 onwards and 7:46 onwards -- The background music is the finale to Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1.

  • I used to watch these shows as a child - and although I did not understand much of the connections being made, it opened my mind to a lot of ideas that would never have learned in school. Watching these shows now as an adult, I literally am laughing out loud at how brilliantly the show is written. I wish this was still on television.

  • Aren't you at my school

  • What is the second fort called?
