Monterey Bay Aquarium Aviary

November 30, 2008: The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a beautiful aviary. There is a sandy area for shore birds and a pond for other aquatic birds. Some of the birds I saw were American Avocet, Black-necked Stilt, Killdeer, Lleast Sandpiper, Long-billed Curlew, Ruddy Turnstone, Sanderling, Snowy Plover, and Willet.

These are all rescued birds who cannot be returned to the wild, due to their injuries. The aviary is very large, so they have plenty of room. They are fed a natural diet. The aviary is open from 10 - 5, after which is closes down so the birds have some quiet time to themselves.

I'm glad these birds, who cannot be released back into the wild, have a home. In the beginning of the video, there is a bird whose wing hangs down a little. This bird cannot fly and would die in the wild, by starvation or predator. But she's safe here. :) Thank you, Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Beautiful! A natural refuge and sanctuary for birds that need our help, and who were most likely injured through our fault, not theirs.

They look to be very much at home. :-)

omg!! i love that place!!!! i go there all the time!!!! like 4 to 6 times a year. my favorite part is when we can go to the touch pools and touch the sting rays. or the little places where you can see each stage of a jelly fish's life. like how big they get!!!! awsome video!!
