This is the full version of some videos I posted a few years ago. Cannon Mills was once the largest manufacturer of towels and sheets in the world. Based in Kannapolis, N.C., the 8 million square ft. complex was the nerve center of Kannapolis. Charles Cannon founded the mill and the mill town in the early 1900's. Fieldcrest bought Cannon in the 1980's followed by Pillowtex in the 90's. After filing bankruptcy in 2002, the plant was closed in 2003, silencing the mill whistle we all knew. Around 4,800 workers were displaced, including my mother and father. My dad was a package designer for 35 years and my step-mom was a telemarketer for over 25 yrs, and most of my family had worked there at some point. The complex was demolished in 2005-2006. The NC Research campus now occupied the land where Cannon mills once stood. The core lab was built where the Cannon mills Lake was. Come visit Kannapolis!
