In December 2005 a big container train, 3SP7—Sydney-Perth, hauled by four 3000 kW (4020 HP) 132 tonne NR class locomotives, rolls into Parkes station along the direct route from Sydney—an unusual phenomenon, since most transcontinental trains now come up from the south to avoid the steep grades and sharp curves of the Blue Mountains.

Presumably the large number of locos is due to the fact that the train has taken this mountainous route. Two of the locos were probably taken off the train at Parkes.

Warning! This video shows the entire train, which takes about three minutes to pass the camera point and is approximately one kilometre long.

  • @wlaohu The NR class locos are fitted with electric 3 piston compressors. not mechanicallly driven compressors like EMD units.

  • @aussietraindriver Thanks for the info there on the NR class locomotives power output. There's a certain sound they make at times while moving that sounds like a turbine cutting in. A little similar to an electric trains air compressor running.

  • @wlaohu Goninans now United goninan rail. Under licence from GE U.S.A - fitted with 4400hp 16cylinder 7FDL engines - de rated to 4000hp due to adhesion issues with outr locosmotives being lighter than the U.S counterparts.

  • NR Class, together with other Australian locos given in-

  • I had a look in the cab of an NR Class loco when I was down under and I must say that they're much better than anything I drive here in the UK, such as Class 66s for example.

  • What company built the mighty NR class ? How much horsepower do they have ?

  • Ok, well it's nice to visit
