From the official film of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett defend their 1500m and 800m titles. Copyright 1985 Bud Greenspan and IOC.
Coe and Ovett - what a fantastic rivalry. Like Daley Thompson and Jurgan Hingsen in the same era. Wonderful athletes.Wonderful achievements. And Cruz, of course, a wonderful champion.
Cruz was awesome though. One of the all-time greats in the form of his career. Shame we never saw Cruz tearing it up in '86 & '87. Would've loved to see him against Konchellah & Elliott in'87
Such a shame Ovett was ill and unable to give himself a decent chance to defend his title. Considering Coe only had 6 months of training behind him, he also did remarkably well. He used the rounds of the 800m as training and sharpeners to get himself to a peak for the 1500m. Shame the 800m final came a bit too soon.
