This re-scoring initiative is done with the greatest respect to the directors and my colleagues who scored the original, and is about opening creative dialogue : romantic comedies are not as easy to score as the smoothness -which is characteristic to the genre itself- would let you believe. With the first music cue I score exactly that what you see : our all-American cowgirl tries to stay brave through her emotional chaos, while the French macho sitting next to her is ridiculing her fear of flying. Hence the Aaron Copland-kinda western touch in the music. With the second cue I was curious to see if I could follow what the plan-window behind Meg Ryan communicates as Kline's character distracts her : the take-off of a giant bird of steel. My 3rd music cue scored in this segment kinda accentuates her first positive experience with flying.

  • I love this genre of Romantic Comedy: two people hate each other so much they must fall in love. There are two essential moments in this genre: 1. When one character subconsciously falls in love, and 2. when they both consciously fall in love. This scene is the first. Luc plants the seed of love in Kate by distracting her from the plane's take off.

  • I am terrified of flying. My husband is from Europe. Every time I watch this scene I am reminded of EVERY time we have flown, how Kevin is TOTALLY my husband, same laidback attitude, same WORDS and everything (including the sexy accent ;))! I am SO Meg, sitting there, freaking out, holding his hand to the point of squishing it into mutation ... I love this scene. I relate to it in EVERY respect ;)
