This is a video introducing Oshun (aka Osun, Ochun, Oxxum, Oxum) who is venerated all over the world by iniates and non-initiates alike (Santeria, Lukumi, Lucumi, Vodou, New Orleans Voodoo, Umbanda, Macumba, Spritism, and Wicca).
She rules over love, sexuality, sensuality, wealth, joy, passion...all the things that make life worth living.
Her favorite colors are yellow, coral, turquoise, orange, and gold.
Her favorite number is 5 and all multiples of it.
Her symbols and instruments include: pumpkins, honey, copper, gold, a mirror, a fan, peacock (feathers).
She enjoys anything sweet and beautiful ie makeup, perfume, jewelry, artwork, music, dancing, parties, laughter, flirting, passion.
She is depicted with a variety of features and skin complexions because when her mysteries were brought to the Americas by the Yoruba (African culture located in West Africa now modern day Nigeria and Benin) she revealed herself to both whites, mulattos, and blacks in the New World. As the Orisha (Goddess) of beauty it is her duty to show all women that they are beautiful and that her spirit lives and breaths within them. Due to historical reasons (persecution during slaver and the colonial era) Oshun took on the image of Nuestra Virgen del Caridad de Cobre and became the patroness of Cuba (both as her Catholic icon and Yoruban goddess). But it is important to remember that she is from Africa and was first portrayed as an African goddess.
Many people overlook Oshun and misunderstand her. She is a woman who embodies all feminity so it's no surprise that she would be underestimated. Yes she appreciates material and physical beauty but that is merely a reflection of her beautiful soul.
She carries a mirror to symbolize her self confidence and strength by being able to appreciate her own beauty = self love. It also symbolizes knowledge of self, Oshun is well aware of her own characteristics, feelings, skills, and flaws. My favorite picture of Oshun is one where she is reclining and gazing into a mirror, however the mirror faces the front of the picture and the reflection is hazy (that's because you can see yourself in Oshun's image as beautiful and strong).
There are also several patakis, or legends (oral tradition) that reveal Oshun's true nature and characteristics. Stories that depict Oshun as the youngest orisha who demanded to be part of a meeting amongts a group of men orishas, How without her support and approval the world went haywire, until the men orisha would apologize and accept her as an equal. That's why Oshun is often seen as the protectress of women and a champion for women's rights.
Oshun has many different aspects to her personality, just like an person. She is deeply caring for the world and humanity. She is self-sacrificing and hardworking. She is glamorous and beautiful. She is a strong, beautiful woman who you should get to know in your life.
