Nurses play an integral role in the day to day care of many sick and injured people across Australia and the world. But how do they hone their skills? Visions looks at how a new set of interactive and responsive nursing mannequins at the University of Melbournes School of Nursing and Social Work are helping improve tomorrow's nurses today. Our second story takes a closer look at the structural integrity of some of Carlton's more iconic architecture, and whether it could withstand an earthquake.

Model Patients Boost Nursing Students' Skills:
High-tech mannequins are the star recruits at the University of Melbourne School of Nursing and Social Work's new simulation ward. The mannequins and the ward give nursing students the chance to hone their skills in a realistic environment before they head out for their clinical training in hospitals. The new ward -- at Level 5, 234 Queensberry Street Carlton - will be open on Open Day on Sunday 17 August.

Demolition Earthquake Research:
An Office of Housing project has enlisted the expertise of The University of Melbourne, Swinburne University of Technology and Delta Demolitions to assess how medium -high rise public housing behave under seismic conditions. It is a rare occurrence that Australian researchers get to test urban buildings for their performance under earthquake conditions. They were able to do so at the demolition of part of the Carlton Public Housing Estate in June 2008.

The study is part of an ARC Discovery grant with Melbourne and Swinburne Universities. For more information go to http://www.civenv.unimelb.edu.au/research/groups/infrastructure_protection_gr....
