@ArthurMorgan1971 God has just given me a revelation that you (and all members) of the LDS should send me £20 each, minus bureau de change fees.
/sarcasm
You really believe your leader had a revelation? Have you read the "Emperor's New Clothes?" How can you be so naïve? I know religious people who would go "Yeah, right!" at that sort of thing. Also, look up Atheist's Wager.

... However, the cultural significance of stories, and whatever genuinely real lessons we might learn from them--are (or may be) quite different things from the "reality" of history. I wouldn't want anyone to think, e.g., that because the first 11 chapters of Genesis are myth and not history that these traditions are without value or have nothing to teach us. And I certainly wouldn't suggest that one need renounce Judaism or Christianity or Islam just because our traditions include myths.

@ArthurMorgan1971 Actually, Arthur, it's not a matter of "belief" at all, but rather what is demonstrably true based on evidence and reason (which, as a person of faith, one could regard as God-given). You're certainly right to see the significance of Genesis 1-11 for the Christian story of universal history: the Apostle Paul relates the story of the Fall to Christ, and the imagery of Christ as a Second Adam and Mary as a New Eve is powerfully present in many Christian traditions.

@GradStud28 Ultimately we're going to believe what we're going to believe on the matter, but as a Christian you need to ask yourself as whether the Christian Faith of unmerited salvation through Christ's death on a cross for a sinful world would have any foundation other than the book of Genesis (Creation, Everything was good, Deception in the Garden of Eden bringing Sin, Curse and Death)?

@ArthurMorgan1971 Arthur, I'm assuming you're Christian too, so as one of your co-religionists let me warn you that CMI, along with Ben Stein's film and the so-called "Intelligent Design" folks (which is just a euphemism for "Creationists") are all trying to sell us a load of crap. I assume from the "1971" in your screenname that you've long since graduated from high school, but I encourage you to revisit what we learned in h.s. biology with a great PBS series and book called simply "Evolution".
I have a question what are you going to do when Jesus comes and puts a boot up your ass

@thatcoolmartian "I have a question what are you going to do when Jesus comes and puts a boot up your ass"
Exactly the same thing you will do when Xenu puts a boot up your ass! but on a serious note if I should ever come face to face with jesus I would ask him what was the value of instigating a religion that only idiots could believe? why punish intelligence!

If some proof of God turns up, I'd be more than fascinated. I'd either piss myself, or be overwhelmed if He extended the hand of grace like He did nearly 20 years ago.
You would have much more to lose than I would if the eternal consequences are true.

@ArthurMorgan1971 That's revalation not proof, When te mormon church wouldn't recognize black people as gods people they were about to fall foul of equal rights law, low and behold the leader of the mormon church had a revelation telling him "all humans are gods people" just in time to avoid a law case. Now I know you don't accept that as revelation from god, yet you find it hard to accept why I wouldn't bee impressed by your revelation

@hughjarrse I'm not sure as to what exchange you're responding to? The gospel is for all people, I'm aware that there have been churches in America's Deep South that had forgotten that, and the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa likewise. God had to give a few prods to the early Church in going also to the non-Jewish people through persecution in Jerusalem, and the vision Peter had in Joppa of the living things that in Jewish culture were deemed unclean to eat but were now right to eat.

@ArthurMorgan1971 "Behemoth and Leviathan could not be anything other than dinosaur related" to say it couldn't be "anything other" is stretching it a bit.
"As for The Mormon Church, it was that they wanted the blacks' money more than the fearing the Civil Rights groups" no it was definitely civil rights, after all they risked alienating their entire "white" congregation
