After recent investigations into the condition of the remaining brake system on D8233 an oppertunity to test the Bogie Brake cylinders was taken on Sunday 6th June 2010, The 4x Westinghouse Type JS Air Brake cylinders that are fitted to D8233 (one pair per bogie) have not been used in around 41 years ever since D8233 underwent conversion work to turn it into an Electric Train Heating (ETH) unit in 1969, this entailed the disconnection and removal of much of the original brake equipment, fortunatly most of the brake rigging, Pipework & cylinders is still intact but had not been operated since the loco became an ETH unit in 1969 so it was quite amazing to see that after all these years the brake still seem to work, I must stress though that this was just a preliminary test and the brake equipment on the bogies will be fully stripped down and renovated when we overhaul the bogies in years to come but its been encouraging to see that they still work after all this time :)
