Yuri is now a college student in the U.S. But when he was born in Russia with a rare birth defect, he was given up for adoption when he was just two days old. His bladder and genitalia were on the outside of his body and he wasn't expected to live beyond his teen years. When he was 10, Yuri came to Johns Hopkins Children's Center where pediatric urologist John Gearhart successfully repaired the birth defect. One of the nurses caring for Yuri grew to love him as her own son and decided to adopt him.
