The interesting thing about the storytelling in Dumbo, is that if you've seen the poster or dvd box, you already know that he flies at some point in the movie. But when you watch it it's still astonishing when he does fly

It seems more modern due to the fact that Walt is opening the cover to the 1980's Black Diamond VHS.

I don't know how much money it made, but it was panned by critics because it "Americanized" a work of British Literature. I love the movie though :)

it did because the picture that preceded it, Fantasia, didn't make a lot of money

It may have been a "happy picture", but it was also a fast, inexpensive, economical one that was intended to restore some desperatly needed revenue that had been lost on box office failures "Pinocchio" and especially "Fantasia".
Just goes to show ya, fast and cheap doesn't always have to mean crappy. This is a real gem, this one is.
