In loving memory of Toby, a special Cairn terrier who was a source of constant joy for his Seattle family from December 24, 1998 - January 19, 2010. This movie was made in fall 2005 to thank one of Toby's people-friends who mailed him some *extremely delicious* doggie treats all the way from Sweden! These moist, chewy nuggets were probably Toby's favorite "dognip" snack of all time. He'd dance in circles if he heard his brother rustling the distinctive plastic bag in the pantry!

Toby loved to sleep with up to three (!) of his favorite toys at a time -- usually one in his mouth and two nearby. He loved to play games his momma and brother invented, like "Helicopter Rescue," where he would dangle mid-air with his strong jaws clenching a suspended tug-toy. He loved rough-housing horseplay, but was gentle with small children and visiting pets. One time when he accidentally scared a visiting baby and made her cry, he felt so badly that he spent the whole night sleeping at the foot of the baby's bed. Toby even growled when his momma tried to take him to bed, as if to say, "Please let me sleep upstairs tonight with our company, Momma, can't you see I'm watching over the baby because I feel bad about scaring it earlier?"

Foxy little Toby sadly passed on before his time was up. At age 11, he suddenly contracted incurable Cushing's disease (caused by pancreas failure after he was viciously mauled by a neighbor's large outdoor dog in May 2009 - an attack so vicious it took him two months to heal and cost $5,000 in vet bills). Although it seemed Toby recovered for several months, his blood was slowly filling with painful crystals, and he went from being delightfully playful to deathly ill in a span of two days. Toby didn't know why his little body was failing; his face showed he was very confused and embarassed about his uncontrollable accidents in those last hours. On the advice of two vets, one of whom was Toby's own uncle, he was gently put to sleep in his daddy's arms on January 19, 2010. Toby was very weak, but he managed to lick his dad's face a few times, as if he knew it was time to say goodbye.

We're sure Toby's sweet-natured, intelligent, and boundlessly energetic spirit will go on to have fun new adventures somewhere in the continuum of things. He will always be remembered lovingly for the time we were lucky to share with him here.

The soundtrack is called, "More, More, More" by Andrea True.

  • Toby reminds me of my 2 Cairns, I am so sorry for your loss of this precious bundle of joy

  • Toby reminds me of our Cairn terrier/pomeranian mix who we lost recently. I feel your loss. Toto was the most lovable dog I ever had, and the best pet I ever had. I hope you cherish all of your fond memories of Toby.

  • We had to put my dog whose name is also Toby down the other day, and he was a Cairn Terrier. Wow. He was also 13.

  • @ProtonvehiCROSS cont.. swear he's still not the same. He would look outside and wait as if we were walking Louie and just cry. But he's ok now thanks to Zoey, and now they too are inseparable. So needless to say, you have my condolences.

  • @ProtonvehiCROSS literally was distraught over it for a long period of time (still till today). One may think "it's just a dog right?". I loved that dog so much that it's not even funny. His little, months-old, brother Bailey (yorkie) took it even worse. He wouldn't even play anymore after Louie died. When we got Zoey (we did so mostly because of how bad Bailey was doing alone) a ludicrously cute female yorkie, Bailey got better and he's ok now; even though we all swear he is still not the sam

  • @ProtonvehiCROSS hey I understand; I had a 5 year old cairn Louie who was seriously like a child in the family. Best dog I could ever imagine having, just as im sure you felt about Toby. Somebody was watching him and had him and Bailey out by the pool. Well to skip details he ended up somehow (still dont know the truth) taking a large amount of water into his lungs; within less than 2 days he had passed away. I'm a 24 year old male, tattoes and all, and I cried like a baby when he died and lite

  • Its very hard losing a pet! My 9 1/2 year old Akita Rocky had to be put down Oct. 19th 2005 because he had a massive tumor in his chest and about a year later my 16 year old cat Morris had a heart attack and died on the vets table during a visit for IV fluids because he had a hyperthyroid. The vet had just told us 5 minutes before that Morris was going to be fine and then Morris had a heart attack. He checked on Morris but said that it was too late and he would only suffer if we kept him alive.

  • always hard to lose a friend. my terrrier oscar died from Diabetes complications 5 years ago and i still miss him dearly. Spent my life savings on cateract surgery and 4 years of insulin, blood curve tests etc etc but it was all worth it. i keep his ashes and his picture on the fire place so hes still close to me. RIP Oscar and RIP toby

  • RIP TOBY
