Animation of the Near Earth Asteroid 2005 YU55 just after closet approach.
The asteroid was about 230,000 miles from earth (closer than the moon) when this sequence of images was taken, moving at a speed of around 290,000 mph.
Each exposure was 20 seconds in duration, during which time the asteroid moved far enough to create the short streak in the image.
2005 YU55 is about 400m in diameter, about the size of a small aircraft carrier and is the largest asteroid to come this close to earth for about 35 years.
thats freaking awesome!!!
At a later date could we talk about how you took this. I have only a 8" telescope. I want to learn more! Good job.
