A scene from the Chinese action flick "Xanda", which is a movie based on the martial art "sanda" (also known as "sanshou"). Sanda is a modernised form of kung-fu which evolved from various wushu styles with foundations based on Jeet Kune Do and Shuai Chiao (Chinese wrestling). It is now a popular full-contact sport much like kickboxing that also allows the use of throws, body slams and take-downs.

This scene shows a sparring practice between a practitioner of traditional kung-fu (Qiang) and a sanda fighter. Some of the deficiencies of traditional kung-fu can be seen here (such as the rigid stances and wide openings). As demonstrated and explained by the sanda fighter, the heavy reliance on 'form' by Qiang is useless if applied in a full-contact bout, and his lack of fluidity allows the former to gain the upper hand in this sparring practice.

  • This movie is biased. Simply because a Kung Fu practitioner loses to a Sanda practitioner doesn't mean traditional Kung Fu sucks in combat.

Master Shi De Jian would own both their asses anyway.

  • 13 years of traditional kung fu for me...I can move like that.

  • @Skillking22 Ok then. :)

  • @solistas95

    LOL I mean the movie.

  • @Skillking22 Who told you that a traditional kung-fu practitioner loses to a San-da practitioner?

  • @Skillking22 thats why shi de jian(traditional master) can kill any sanda, modern wushu guys very easily ,simple as dat. GOGO SHI DE JIAN !

  • @Skillking22 yea after all traditional martail atrs are taught to kill simple as that, modern wushu is more for show these days never to fight. The only reason people think that traditional arts are not useful coz mostly spar or fights have rules, and tradiotional arts cannot fight in rules coz of their brutal nature like eye gouges, groin kciks and more deadly moves. To conclude actually traditional arts are taught to kill ,modern ats are best for sport and with rulesbut instreet thereno effective

  • Sanda is a combat system that organizes Chinese Martial Arts into a system that is simple enough to use while under extreme stress but complex enough to harm/kill your opponent from various angles and distances. A fighter can be trained to actually fight within the first week, incorporating progressive weight training, impact conditioning, stamina from running, reflex training and sparring. Importantly, it can be modified to suit ring fighting so you can have trial by combat to test skill/ideas.

  • @redplague888 Sanda/Sanshou is made from different applications of traditional Chinese fighting styles, combined with modern scientific efficiency. It's taught alongside with Taolu (forms).

  • @elguapotetigre

So is Xanda like Jeet kune do, almost? The principles that you described for Xanda sounds almost like jeet kune do...or is it something different?

  • You guys are silly. Sanda is kung fu. All it is freefighting kung fu. That has it's roots in Laitai.

  • The Kung Fu guy obviously lack combat experience. He must have attacked based on fixed combos (forms) yet when things don't go his way, he's screwed.
