War and Peace is a portrait of Russia and her people, caught up in the swirling tides of history during the Napoleonic Era.
Director Sergei Bondarchuk's Oscar-winner flawlessly recreates Leo Tolstoy's epic masterpiece, capturing not only the most minute historical details, but also the emotion, essence, and atmosphere of the classic novel.
Hailed as the definitive marriage between literature and cinema, it took five years to complete, costing over one hundred million dollars. It is estimated that a production of this magnitude would cost over 1 billion dollars today, making this the most expensive film ever made.

@parafleet You fail to mention Tolstoy's point is that all history is inevitable. According to Tolstoy, Napoléon Bonaparte's birth was inevitable, brought about by countless previous historical events and destined to lead to more.

I had the rare opportunity of finishing this 8-hour movie (in installment). What cinematic experience!

@Olamtir It's either sly or self-delusional to dismiss the power of personality. It's why humans will follow a certain leader over the cliff like lemmings to certain death. In fact, the idiot-leaders know this, and that is why they put so much effort into propaganda. People are individual in nature. You will never be a Michael Jordan or a Joseph Stalin. Likewise, Jordan will never be you. The cult of personality is real. To deny the fact is quite dangerous.

@parafleet Somone of power and pride for Napeleon, and someone wanting to destroy the Versailles Treaty and give Germany back her strength.

@Olamtir What other person would have Napoleon's psychology, experiences, and peculiar mental vision to do what he did? The same question can be asked of Hitler.
