VIDEO: TV Cameraman Attacked, Hit with Stick

DAVDSON COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) —
A television cameraman was attacked Thursday afternoon while shooting video of alleged malnourished horses in Davidson County.

WGHP received a news tip Wednesday regarding concerns over two horses owned by Danny Kirkus Sr. County Commissioner Cathy Dunn and a member of the U.S. Equine Rescue League shared concerns over the welfare of a couple horses.

Chris Weaver, a cameraman for WGHP-TV, was shooting video of the horses alongside a public road in Davidson County on Thursday when Kirkus Sr. approached him holding a large stick and a bucket of horse feed.

Kirkus Sr. swung the stick at the cameraman twice, hitting him once on the lower leg.

The cameraman and a FOX8 reporter returned to the television truck where they were again approached by Kirkus Sr. The suspect again raised the stick at Weaver but did not swing.

The cameraman was not seriously injured.

The Davidson County Sheriff's Department arrested Kirkus and charged him with two felonies including assault with a deadly weapon.

Sheriff David Grice said they have received several calls about the horses over the past year but said the treatment "does not rise to the level of abuse."
