The story must have changed after Megaman 3, then, because in that he was a prototype for a new form of robot. It was pretty specific.

@RouroniRockman The manga go to a very great length to show us that Bass/Forte is stronger than Rock in terms of raw firepower and potential. However, Rock has "justice" on his side, essentially allowing him to trump any opponent as long as the world is at stake. As Blues told Forte, Rock wins because he has a reason to fight, while Forte does not, and it goes a long way.

@Alamandorious Blues' independence is the result of a critical flaw in his systems; it's a mistake, not how he was built, and it's the reason he doesn't go to Dr. Light to have his power core fixed; fear that Dr. Light would also fix his "free spirit". So yes, Blues is Rock's prototype; more accurately, he's the prototype of all Master-type robots (ie Robot Masters, robots with an AI capable of commanding others and drones).

@mrpopia17 Never said he was Zero. Some people make that conclusion; until I see proof, I do not. Protoman is a pretty cool character though ^^

Mmm, having played and beaten Megaman 3 back in the day, dun think Protoman is a prototype for Megaman. He acts and thinks independantly, which makes him more a prototype for Reploids than anything else.
As I recall, it was mentioned fairly specifically that he was a Prototype for a new type of robot.
