Pixar Toy Story Zoetrope Science Festival Royal Museum Edinburgh

***Warning Strobe Lighting***

The zoetrope has lots of large models all with slightly different characteristics.
The models spin once per second (too fast for our eyes to comprehend).
Then the lights dim and the strobe lighting flashes 18 times per second.

This creates the illusion of moving animation.

  • This was one of the coolest things at disneyland!!

  • what's the name of the song that's being played?

  • Yeah this thing was amazing. When we walked in the room, it was off. Then it turned on and everybody in the room was mesmerized. It's so cool. Not only do they look animated it looks like the characters have actually come to life. I guess it's because it's an actual three dimensional piece in front of you.

  • wow that is cool as shit only problem is i feel bad for the guy who has to fix it when the sound timing is off

  • Brilliant, a prime example of the modern animation mixed with the old. I came across this researching for my animation course, and it's such a wonderful sight to see, I wish I could see it in person!

  • This thing actually isn't a zoetrope but based on the electric tachyscope invented by Ottomar Anschütz in Germany that uses electric stroboscopic light instead of the slits in a revolving drum of the zoetrope. But people call all things like that zoetrope just so it sounds more American.
