The PICKENS SISTERS were born in Macon, Georgia, and grew up there and in Atlanta. Their father, a cotton broker, played the piano and their mother sang. At first the sisters sang for friends, then at churches and schools. The family moved to Park Avenue in Manhattan in 1932, and a test recording for Victor made such an impression with radio executives that they hired the sisters unseen. Promoted as "Three Little Maids From Dixie", they appeared in Thumbs Up on Broadway and in a movie, Sitting Pretty. Signed to Victor as Victor's answer to the popular Brunswick recording artists, Boswell Sisters, they recorded 25 sides for Victor from early 1932 until late 1934. Their records had a much more novel quality than the harder Jazz styled Boswell Sisters' records. The group earned $1 million in five years but dissolved when two sisters got married and a fourth, who was the group's manager, also left the group.

„Did You Ever See A Dream Walking?" was a hit in 1933/34. The music was written by Harry Revel, the lyrics by Mack Gordon.

  • i first heard this song when i was a kid in the old mighty mouse cartoon when he was trying to save his girlfriend.

  • this is lovely .

  • This is really first-rate singing.

The Andrews Sisters, whose popularity began in the late 1930s and continued for more than 10 years, far exceeded the fame of either the Boswell Sisters or the Pickens Sisters - yet the southern accents of both the latter groups strongly influenced the Andrews Sisters, which they acknowledged.

  • @neworleansrandy - Dunno why, but I think Lawrence Welk had the Pickens Sisters in mind when he presented the Lennon Sisters. There is a languidity both acts.

  • nice to hear yet another sister act trying to be the Boswell Sisters. Not as sophisticated but they're pleasant, though.

  • boswell sisters why you dont try.........amazing

  • the pickens sisters im drake one of the pickens twins

  • A really novel approach by the sisters. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • just so eerily beautiful, unique, and gorgeous. Remarkable. Nothing compares. Sort of like the Comedian Harmonists?
