I was driving up Center Street in Portland on my way to the parking garage on Free street. I saw a bunch of Pigeon's scatter and then caught a glimpse of a rather large Raptor flying towards the building on the corner of Free and Center streets. When I got in the parking deck I was able to observe the bird. It was fairly large and shaped like an Accipiter so I figure its a Cooper's Hawk, but I suppose it could be a Northern Goshawk...feel free to e-mail me if you know better.

  • Naaa, thats a female immature Coopers hawk

  • I have a resident Cooper's Hawk here, and this thing was really big. That's why I went with Goshawk. It is possible that it was a Cooper's hawk, so hard to tell them apart.

  • i think its a sparrow hawk because northern goshawk are not so urban

  • Sparrow Hawks (American Kestrels) are VERY small. They are slighty larger than Robins. (Turdus Migratorius) While the name implies Hawk, a Sparrow Hawk is a small Falcon. This bird is definitely an Accipiter. If it's not a Goshawk, it could be a large female Cooper's Hawk. I have some video of both if you want to check them out :)

  • i run that garage you took that from luckly we didnt catch you we confastate videos and camras if used off the garage with out the city managers permission

  • Wow, you must think I'm a moron. 1st off: It's private property and not owned by the city. Secondly, it's run by Dirigo Management, not by a 39 year old man that doesn't know the word is "confiscate" And finally, if your ran the a city run lot you would have no right to confiscate private property from an individual who was on public property. Thanks for playing.

  • it looks likea goshawk but just to small i think it might be a imature coopers like snitcherpup said

  • A good clue for an immature Goshawk is that they have a white stripe over their eyes, kind of like a white eye brow. Otherwise a large female coopers is about the same size as a small male Goshawk.

  • Darn it's still a juvenile, I just got into birds, and I've yet to see an adult goshawk. I really want to see that grey gunsmoke vest. Lovely bird.

  • not a moron but it is legal to take away pictures of videos takeing off garages in the city if you do it with out permission.

and that is per the city lawyer .

deal with it i have been in the bussness for 20 years and i know more about laws then you do pertanining to parking garages.

and i also know the head of dirigo managment and thay would have done the same if the compay had security guards.
