I like a nice short cut calculation trick as much as the next guy but the problem with all fast maths tricks is that each one only works for certain conditions. So you have to remember loads of tricks, which isn't easy if you don't often use them. Also, you need to understand conventional methods to see why they work anyway, otherwise its just learning stuff parrot fashion.

The good thing with 'slow' arithmetic is that it's obvious why it works and it always does work.
