Released in 1997 on Alternative Tentacles.

Half Japanese is a indie rock / punk / weirdo rock band (with liberal doses of lo fi and experimental) from Ann Arbor, MI. They formed in 1975. This is somewhere around their 12th album.

I don't have the greatest frame of reference to talk about these guys. All I know is that Bone Machine plays it fairly straight, as far this weirdo rock stuff goes. Most of the songs here are pleasant and upbeat. They deal with love, romance and awkwardness as well as Frankenstein and UFO's.

The songs on here are pretty quirky and silly. These guys definitely don't take themselves too seriously. Some songs were more "experimental" than others.

Not a mind blowing piece of work, but it made for an enjoyable listen. The songs were varied enough to hold my interest. Nice to see a band can stick around for so long and still maintain some degree of artistic integrity.

3/5

  • i don't think i've ever made a mix tape that didn't include a half japanese song. they're one of my favorite bands of all time. they don't have many awesome albums, but they have a multitude of amazing songs.

  • Mix tapes rule.

  • half japanese is the best band i don't listen to. i hypothetically listen to them. actually i have put the song "red sun" on a lot of mixes. the documentary about half japanese is awesome. maureen tucker from the velvet underground plays a bunch of songs with them in it including a velvet underground song. your album is after jad's brother quit i think. there songs are always about girls or monsters like weird al's songs are about tv or food. great review!

  • I LOOOOOVE Half Japanese. Soooo weird.

  • I usually try to stay away from Alternative Tentacles at all costs, but I might check-a-check this.

  • I'm doing good! how wonderful was it to hear that?
